Airline Approved Pet Carriers
Customers often contact us to request whether a specific pet carrier is airline approved. Airline travel with your pet is one of the more popular reasons for purchasing a pet carrier. We can't say that this carrier or that carrier is best for the airlines because with the new security concerns, the guidelines change from from time to time and vary among different airline carriers. The first thing you must always do is contact your airline for specific directions.
Ofentimes, you can tell from the instructions you receive from the airline which carrier will be suitable. We do not tend to indicate on all item descriptions whether a carrier is airline approved unless the information is provided by the manufacturer. That does not mean that a description that does not indicate this is not "airline approved." When you see a description that does say "airline approved" it
simply means that IF an airline allows you to carry a pet, the "airline approved" carrier would qualify because it meets airline carry-on standards and fits under airplane
seat. You must check with the airline if the carrier is required to completely contain the pet. Many carriers have peek holes or openings that allow the pet to stick it's head out. Many active dogs or dogs who become nervous with airline travel could conceiveably jump out of such carriers if the dogs are small enough. We do sell carriers that secure the pet within the carrier entirely such as our Sherpa pet carrier. We have several such pet carriers.
These tend to be the more expensive carriers that have all the
bells and whistles. We have several backpack style pet carriers that are more affordable that also keep your pet fully contained in the carrier.
When finding a suitable pet carrier, much depends on the temperament of the dog. Some don't take to too much leeway and do better with a pet carrier that doesn't have a peek hole. Consider the following when it comes to airline pet travel:
Most airlines require your pet to be at least eight weeks old.
Let your pet become acquainted with his or her pet carrier prior to travel. Pets become less stressed that way.
Airlines may require a health certificate prior to travel that should be issued by your vet within 30 days of travel.
Check that cargo is shipped on your specific flight if you want your pet to travel by cargo. This is not always available in the hot summer months or when it's very cold. If you want to use cargo, make sure you have the appropriate pet carrier for that trip.
